They cannot avoid being spit out!
They have to be fervent in serving the Lord and try to bring about a new social order.

Andrew, maybe there are ways by which the lukewarm CAN avoid being spit out. You mentioned two of them ... of course, then they would no longer be lukewarm! We are all lukewarm at times; St. Thomas More's prayer can become a model for us all.

Francis teaches us to surrender totally to God and depend on the Holy Spirit, especially in times of dryness. The lukewarm can take Francis' teaching to heart, and acknowledge their essential poverty before God, hang loose from their wealth, and share it. They can repent and cultivate inner conversion and reactivate their dull consciences.

Francis has so much to teach us all, rich or poor, about gratitude. Gratitude for everything, as coming from the hand of God, can give us the same freedom the Saint enjoyed in Christ. If we take seriously the CSDC's distinction between "wealth and luxury" and "abundance", we can learn that the "abundant life" need not look anything like the "good life" as understood in our society. This life of Christ within us, blessed by God, can banish lukewarmness and make us pleasing to Him. No more spitting!
